Position Overview:

We’re looking for a driven, outgoing, and self-motivated Freelance Magazine Ad Sales Manager to help grow our advertising base. This is a boots-on-the-ground sales role, ideal for someone who thrives on building relationships, making cold calls, and walking into businesses to create opportunities.

You’ll be responsible for generating new business through proactive outreach, in-person visits, and consistent follow-up. If you’re a natural connector who isn’t afraid to start conversations and close deals, this role offers strong earning potential and flexibility.

What You’ll Do:

• Conduct outbound cold calls to local businesses to introduce advertising opportunities

• Identify and target strategic businesses that align with The Newsboy Local audience

• Perform in-person drop-ins to build relationships and pitch advertising placements

• Present ad packages (print + digital) clearly and confidently

• Manage your pipeline from prospecting to close, including consistent follow-up

• Build and maintain relationships with business owners and decision-makers

• Customize pitches based on business needs and marketing goals

• Collaborate with the internal team on pricing, packages, and campaign ideas

• Track outreach activity, leads, and closed deals

 

What You Bring:

• Proven sales experience (B2B, advertising, or media sales preferred)

• Confidence in cold calling and in-person outreach

• Strong communication and relationship-building skills

• Self-starter mindset with the ability to manage your own schedule and pipeline

• Comfortable handling objections and closing deals

• Organized and consistent with follow-up

 

Bonus Qualifications:

• Familiarity with the Austin and surrounding area business community

• Experience in media, publishing, or local advertising sales

• Passion for supporting local businesses, creatives, and community storytelling

 

Compensation:

• Commission only (20% of the contract sale)

• Potential for ongoing, recurring commission on retained accounts
