The Newsboy Local Editorial & Advertising Policy
Effective Date: August 1, 2026
Purpose:
The Newsboy Local, published by Newsboy Publishing, is an independent, community-focused publication dedicated to celebrating the artists, musicians, writers, entrepreneurs, nonprofits, and organizations that contribute to the cultural fabric of Austin and surrounding areas.
This policy establishes the standards governing editorial content, advertising, sponsored content, and event promotion. Our goal is to maintain the trust of our readers through transparent, fair, and independent editorial practices while providing meaningful promotional opportunities for our community partners.
1. Editorial Independence
Editorial decisions are made solely by The Newsboy Local's editorial staff.
Advertising supports the publication but does not guarantee editorial coverage, favorable reviews, or endorsements.
Likewise, the absence of advertising will never exclude an individual, business, or organization from editorial consideration.
2. Editorial Content
Editorial stories are intended to inform, educate, inspire, or highlight individuals and organizations whose work contributes meaningfully to the local community.

3. Community Spotlights
The Newsboy Local recognizes that local businesses, artists, and organizations often have compelling stories that extend beyond commercial promotion.
Community Spotlights are editorial features selected by the editorial staff to highlight individuals, businesses, nonprofits, or organizations making a meaningful contribution to the community.
These stories are written independently by The Newsboy Local.
Interview subjects may provide factual information, photographs, and supporting materials; however, editorial control remains solely with The Newsboy Local.
Drafts are generally not provided for approval prior to publication, except when verifying factual accuracy.
4. Advertising
Advertisements are paid promotional placements purchased by businesses, organizations, or individuals.
Advertisers retain control over their promotional messaging, branding, and creative assets, subject to The Newsboy Local's advertising standards.
All advertisements will be clearly distinguishable from editorial content through design, placement, or labeling.
Advertising does not imply endorsement by The Newsboy Local.
5. Sponsored Content
Sponsored Content is paid promotional material designed to provide useful or educational information while supporting a sponsor's marketing objectives.
Sponsored Content differs from editorial content in that it is created through collaboration with the sponsor and is compensated.
All Sponsored Content will be clearly identified using language such as:
-
Sponsored
-
Sponsored Feature
-
Partner Story
-
Presented By
Sponsored Content will not be presented in a manner that could reasonably be mistaken for independent editorial reporting.
6. Event Promotion
The Newsboy Local welcomes submissions for concerts, exhibitions, book launches, festivals, nonprofit events, workshops, performances, and other community activities.
Event submissions are reviewed at the discretion of the editorial staff.
Editorial coverage of an event is determined by factors including:
-
Community significance
-
Newsworthiness
-
Cultural impact
-
Originality
-
Reader interest
-
Available editorial space
Requests whose primary purpose is to increase attendance, ticket sales, registrations, or commercial visibility are considered promotional in nature.
Such requests may be better served through:
-
Paid advertisements
-
Sponsored content
-
Featured event placements
-
Community event listings (where available)
7. Repeat Editorial Coverage
The Newsboy Local is committed to representing a broad and diverse creative community.
To ensure equitable coverage, repeated editorial features of the same individual, business, organization, or recurring event may be limited.
Subsequent editorial coverage will generally be considered only when there is a significant new development, including but not limited to:
-
Publication of a new book
-
Release of an album or major creative work
-
Opening of a new business or location
-
Major organizational milestone or anniversary
-
Significant community initiative
-
Receipt of notable awards or recognition
-
Newsworthy achievements or developments
Routine event announcements, recurring performances, seasonal promotions, and standard business updates are generally considered promotional content rather than editorial stories.
8. Event Calendar
The Newsboy Local may provide community event listings as a public service.
Inclusion in an event calendar is subject to available space, editorial discretion, and publication deadlines.
Calendar listings do not constitute editorial coverage or endorsement.
Priority may be given to events that align with the publication's mission and serve the broader community.
9. Reviews and Endorsements
The Newsboy Local does not sell reviews, rankings, awards, or editorial endorsements.
Editorial opinions expressed by contributors represent their independent judgment.
Advertising relationships do not influence reviews or recommendations.
10. Gifts and Complimentary Access
Editorial staff and contributors should avoid accepting gifts, compensation, or other benefits that may create an actual or perceived conflict of interest.
Complimentary admission, review copies, or media access may be accepted when necessary for editorial coverage but do not guarantee publication or favorable coverage.
11. Advertising Standards
The Newsboy Local reserves the right to reject advertising that:
-
Contains false or misleading claims
-
Promotes unlawful activity
-
Contains discriminatory, hateful, or offensive content
-
Conflicts with the publication's mission or values
-
May reasonably undermine reader trust
Acceptance of advertising does not constitute endorsement of the advertiser's products, services, or opinions.
12. Corrections
The Newsboy Local is committed to accuracy.
Verified factual errors will be corrected promptly.
Requests for corrections should clearly identify the error and provide supporting documentation when appropriate.
Editorial opinions are not subject to correction solely because readers or sources disagree with them.
13. Editorial Integrity
The Newsboy Local does not sell editorial coverage.
No individual, organization, advertiser, sponsor, or contributor may purchase, guarantee, or otherwise influence editorial decisions.
Our commitment is to serve our readers by producing honest, transparent, and community-centered journalism that reflects the creativity, diversity, and character of the communities we serve.
Maintaining editorial independence is essential to preserving the trust placed in our publication.
